Cowra Garden Club News

ON Thursday February 4 our Business Development Director, Philip Diprose was the guest speaker at the monthly Garden Club meeting. The club is a not for profit organisation and meets on the first Thursday of each month in the Multi Purpose room adjacent to the Cowra Library. Its objective is to extend the culture of gardening into the wider community for the benefit of all citizens. Membership costs $5 for a full year and its main funding source is the sale of donated garden produce and plants to those who attend meetings. Any surplus funds are donated to local charities.

During his talk Mr Diprose explained some of the components and principles behind managing holistically and other regenerative frameworks in the context of his and his wife’s property Ochre Arch at Grenfell. Of particular interest to the group were he and his wife’s’ own holistic goal, the parallel between grazing and pruning, the need to allow plants to fully recover post (severe) grazing ad how over grazing occurs if this is not done, the plant growth rate curve and the critical importance of balancing soil bacteria and fungi ratios in grazing pastures as espoused by the Soil Foodweb Institute.

The talk was enthusiastically received by the 25 or so members in attendance, with the chairperson finding it necessary to stop the flow of questions when the scheduled meeting closing time was reached. One member is very keen to establish a community garden in the Cowra area. She and another member have asked Mr Diprose to speak at further meetings.

For more information about the Cowra Garden Club readers are encouraged to telephone 0263 421804.

Note: There will be no Garden Club meeting on March 4 because the venue is otherwise in use.
